Can Three Friends drive social change in the community ?
In a rural Indian village, three dedicated friends showed that passion and commitment can lead to extraordinary social impact.
In 2003, during a World Women’s Day seminar organized by the Bhavana Arts Club in Kuthanur, a critical issue emerged. The conversation highlighted the plight of mentally challenged children, a topic that deeply moved the club’s leaders—Shri P.P. Ullas, Shri K.A. Rajesh, and Shri T.R. Santhakumaran. Recognizing the urgent need for action, the trio decided to address this pressing issue.
Despite their modest livelihoods as friends, Ullas, Rajesh, and Santhakumaran dedicated their spare time to researching the needs of mentally challenged children in Kuthanur. They discovered approximately 60 such children in their village alone, many of whom were neglected or confined at home due to financial constraints and lack of appropriate facilities.
Determined to make a difference, the trio expanded their research to nearby villages, uncovering similar situations. This led to the vision of establishing an institution to support these children. They reached out to families, educating them on the benefits of language and social skills development and the importance of providing a supportive environment.
From this vision, Tejus Charitable Trust was born. What began as a small initiative grew into a fully functional special needs school and vocational center. Today, Tejus supports 45 students, offering them a nurturing environment to learn and thrive. The school is dedicated to personal growth, helping each student build confidence and acquire skills for a better future.
The success of Tejus stands as a testament to the extraordinary impact of three ordinary individuals fueled by a deep passion to make the world a better place.
